DIY-er Learns Garage Door Math
New Springs + Free Time = Good As New. This is the correct answer for a trained door technician. For the untrained, a paid tutor is the cost effective, “no brainer” way to the correct answer. This customer sums it up in his Facebook review.
“One of the large 48″ Torsion springs on the garage door snapped (on a Sunday of course)! Being a “do-it-yourselfer”, I researched on-line, Youtube, etc. and was convinced I could do this job myself. I checked all the home centers which, it turns out, don’t sell torsion springs due to the HUGE variety of sizes. After searching on-line, I found these uncommon sized springs at a midwestern company that could ship them by Wednesday. Nearly $200 for both springs (better to replace them as a pair) and the twist bar tools, plus 2-day shipping (Wednesday PM arrival.) I figured $200 and my Wednesday night spent working on the door. But, I hesitated, not clicking the “Buy button.”
On Monday morning, I called Overhead Door in Olathe and asked to them to quote two 48 inch springs, which being unique, had to be cut special. The springs were only $189, or springs plus installed that day for $289. No Brainer!
Frank guided me, Mike took care of the logistics and Ted did an outstanding installation of both springs in less than 30 minutes! It would have taken me 3 hours! And I admit, it is more difficult than it looks! Thank you Overhead Door!” – Steven, Overland Park
